British perfume house Penhaligon’s says one of its newest fragrances, Vaara ($160), was inspired by the Royal House of Marwar-Jodphur in Rajasthan. Vaara started life as the passion of His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh II, who desired a scent to commemorate the birth of his granddaughter, Vaara, and to reflect his family’s deep connection with Jodhpur. Master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour interpreted this aromatic world of the Maharaja and created the scent, which begins with a blend of coriander and carrot seeds, saffron and quince—ingredients discovered during his trips to local markets in Jodhpur. The heart of  Vaara is said to belong to the gardens of Balsamand, the Maharaja’s summer palace with two roses blended with notes of Indian magnolia, freesia and iris. Substantial bottles and exotic jewel-toned boxes and labels capture the elegance of a Maharaja, with charm and majesty.
